Ian Martyn Genres like anti-folk and folk punk are definitely not what come to my mind at first when I think of the Odyssey, but when I heard those first na na nas, I was absolutely hooked. I've listened through the whole album a few times now, and I can't think of a more fitting representation of Odysseus and co's (mis)adventures on their way home. Packing this much variety and depth into a musical interpretation of the Odyssey is an absolute treat. I hope I can see the musical someday. Favorite track: I’m Going Home (Main Theme).

Well, it's nice to be victorious but it's better yet to get the call That peace has broken out, there’s no more guns and ships and city walls And aeroplanes and goatskin drums and every place that broke your heart Can all just be bright memory, the war is over, life can start again So ring the bells On every hill I know too well I've looked at heaven and been through hell And I’m going home I’m gonna plant a garden in the furrows that tank treads made I’m gonna own a bakery, start a family, learn to rollerblade There’s gonna come a day real soon when all these fields will be in bloom So hold my hand cause you still can, my little boat has plenty room We’ve faced our fill of fears Spent twice our share of blood and tears And after ten long, endless years We’re going home And god, can I find a place to rest my bones And god, can I ditch this noisy world just for a day alone Me and you When there’s nothing left to lose So help me god, we’ll make it through I’m going home

There where the ocean ends just past the sky-line, Where the seagulls are whirling and singing their song When each part of my body is screaming for rest There’s a hook in my ribcage that pulls me along There where the bronze of the sky comes all feather-white There where reflection turns into a flame What I know is waiting for me keeps my heart on a chain I’ve got a house on a hill where the bills are almost all paid I’ve got friends and neighbors, and a quiet life that I’ve made I’ve got a girl that I’ve had since high school, and I know her and she knows me Just over the horizon Just over…

When everything’s turned into ash, When the ocean turns darker than wine, When the air turns so black that it chokes you, I’ll fill up your lungs if you fill mine One day we’ll float free from this rubble When all our sharp memories fade We’ll shout out a song and we’ll raise up a toast To those few lucky suckers that made it So la da di da, here’s to the living Here’s to my friends with a hole in their head You stand and you take what the gods might be giving And you pass round a glass til you’re better than dead I’m gonna sail to the sun I’m gonna turn back the gulf stream I’m gonna pull down the stars from the sky And next up I’ll try and get clean Well, they say go to sea for the freedom And they say go to war for the fame And then go back home as a hero Until after two weeks they forget your name So la da di da, here’s to the living Here’s to my friends with a hole in their head You stand and you take what the gods might be giving And you pass round a glass til you’re better than dead And this is for Patroclus, gentle friend, You left early, if only you saw how they cried at the end And this is for Achilles, you shaved your head, And you burned it all down when you saw that your baby was dead And this is for Agamemnon He made it home, Just to find it a stranger, and bleed out alone So la da di da, here’s to the living Here’s to my friends with a hole in their head You stand and you take what the gods might be giving And you pass round a glass til you’re better than dead

I’m an island boy, poseidon’s pride and joy, got salt water in my veins I invented sails, surfboards and several whales, and I’m learnin’ how to make rain So get used to the sand between your toes and the sunlight on your skin Cause you’re on island time with the king of the winds King of the winds, son of a gun, I’m a sailin’ soul No heart attack to sit right on back and watch the good times rock and roll Just let your mind go to the blue-green line between the sea and the sky Just catch yourself an island breeze and let it all float by Folks back on land just don’t understand how to take time out of their day I’m an easy goin’ breeze blowin’ helluva guy, and I can chase any storm clouds away A tropical trip is just the doctor’s prescription for to leave your cares behind Let me fill up your sails and i’ll spin you a tale and we’ll have us a whale of a time King of the winds, son of a gun, I’m a sailin’ soul No heart attack to sit right on back and watch the good times rock and roll Just let your mind go to the blue-green line between the sea and the sky Just catch yourself an island breeze and let it all float by

CIRCE: Sailor boy, So very tired and far from home How many months have you been all alone? Poor little dog so long without a… place to rest your head Dance with me As romantic music fills the air The perfect evening for a love affair After which it’s only fair that you’ll no longer want me dead The passion grows, I suppose that it shows how I want you You glow with a rose between your teeth My turtledove, how you long for the love I can give you The stars above and us two underneath So how about it? CIRCE: Silly boy ODYSSEUS: I’ll be honest this is really doing nothing for me CIRCE: You should be swooning, I don’t understand ODYSSEUS: I mean, I guess I’m flattered but I just don’t love your whole deal CIRCE: I’m quite the lady and you’re quite the man ODYSSEUS: You seem nice! Well not that nice, I mean, what with the pig thing CIRCE: What the hell do you have planned that you can turn your back on this? ODYSSEUS: (Yknow, it’s funny you should ask that) I’ve got a house on a hill where the bills are almost all paid CIRCE: So you’re in debt and risking soil erosion ODYSSEUS: I’ve got friends and neighbors, and a quiet life that I’ve made CIRCE: A quiet life? More like a boring life, is that what you want? ODYSSEUS: I’ve got a girl that I’ve known since high school, and- CIRCE: Wait! Before you say another word, Just listen to this mister prissy monogamous Odysseus, It’s not like I’d do this for any man I’m a goddess, so confess you’re at least curious odysseus You’ve never had a woman like I am

GHOSTS: Drifting, forget, ev’ning, infinite Wand’ring, nostos, mem’ry, nekyia (Phantoms we in faded shadow) Summoned, stranger, warming, warning Poppy, lamplight, prophesy, memory (Sacrifice to answering echoes) Who are you that you can see us poor shades You are warm, you are light in the black of the night (Touching) Drifting, forget, ev’ning, infinite Prophesy, memory, nostos, nekyia (Speak and hear the ancients answer) FIRST GHOST: When you’re dead you don’t have much to do But mope around and read the news, so we’ve all heard of you We know about your troubles and we’ve heard about your strife So sit right back and let the spirits give you some advice GHOSTS: Welcome to the afterlife Us friendly ghosts will tell you how to get home to your wife So you better listen closely to our dead-guy advice Cause you’re not where you belong And it's a long, long way back home DIOGENES: Alive, I was a wise man of renown Which is how I got invited to the richest house in town “Please don’t spit onto the floor” my billionaire host said Not wanting to offend him, I spat in his face instead GHOSTS: So welcome to the afterlife Not as warm as Florida, but you can’t beat the price! So you better listen closely to our dead-guy advice Cause you’re not where you belong And it's a long, long way back home PLINY: My name’s Pliny and if you’re sick I’ll tell you what to do Add some crushed up lizard teeth into your monkey stew SAPPHO: I’m Sappho of Lesbos, and I’m known throughout the world And to fix your problems I think you should do gay stuff with girls SHAKESPEARE: My name’s William Shakespeare, and if you’re asking me, The very best thing for you to do is be, or not to be WASHINGTON: My name is George Washington, i never told a lie— TIRESIAS: If you’re seeking for Tiresias, you’ll find his finding easy Because he that you are seeking is the he that you are seeing I am he and he is me, I am the spirit of that prophet Who knew many things about the world before he shuffled off of it It seems you’ve been quite cursed, and what is worse, it’s by Poseidon Meaning you’ll be, as a sailor, doomed to failure trying hiding But a simple salve can sooth this though so sit silent and listen Because you must not be missing major missives such as this one is: When you come to the island of Thrinacia Try not to eat the sun god’s sacred cows GHOSTS: So welcome to the afterlife If you’re used to living, you can bet you’ll think it bites! So you better listen closely to our dead-guy advice Cause you’re not where you belong And it's a long, long way back Welcome to the afterlife Comparing it to Tartarus, you’ll find it’s relatively nice! So you better listen closely to our dead-guy advice Cause you’re not where you belong And it's a long, long way back

Lullay my darling, come my sweeting Come, thou tired, come to thy rest In from the cold winds, the wild waves’ beating Hoireann is ò ro hug o rò Far a la leò bha ho ro eile Na ho rò bhi ò Hi rì na ho ro ri ò Here I’ve a hearth and fire burning A table full laden with meat and with wine Each little thing for a wild heart’s yearning Hoireann is ò ro hug o rò Far a la leò bha ho ro eile Na ho rò bhi ò Hi rì na ho ro ri ò I know your pain and I know your sorrow, I’ve seen your terror, and I’ve seen your joy I offer a warm night and a softer morrow. Hoireann is ò ro hug o rò Far a la leò bha ho ro eile Na ho rò bhi ò Hi rì na ho ro ri ò Lullay my darling, don’t you tire? Come to the arms of the warm, quiet sea Will you not wash off the blood and fire? Hoireann is ò ro hug o rò Far a la leò bha ho ro eile Na ho rò bhi ò Hi rì na ho ro ri ò

CALYPSO: The tide goes out, we pick up shells to take them home You tell me your old stories. I don’t let on I know them. I’m thinking about dinner, Tuesday night and there’s a pot on the stove Your brow cracks like sand as you watch the horizon. I don't think about it, I don’t think about it Calypso, Dolóessa—she who conceals. A girl who takes care of herself. one that knows what's real I’m the queen of my little rock, my only friend, and I’m happy And I’m small and alone in the hot island sun And I catch myself looking at you, oh god, what have I done If I could build us a home From sandcastles and sea foam Would you stay with me? The tide comes in, and hurls its refuse on our shores White knuckles underneath the table, I keep my eyes trained on the kitchen door And watch the seagulls in their reeling and I, I love you more than breathing ODYSSEUS: I’ve got a house on a hill where the bills are almost all paid CALYPSO: We pick up shells to take them home ODYSSEUS: I’ve got friends and neighbors, and a quiet life that I’ve made CALYPSO: The tide goes out, I’m thinking about dinner ODYSSEUS: I’ve got a girl that I’ve known since high school, and I know her and she knows me CALYPSO: Tuesday night and there’s a pot on the stove, I don't think about it, I don’t think about it ODYSSEUS Just over the horizon CALYPSO: And I would build us a home, A warm soft bed and a disconnected phone, If you’d just stay, if you’d just stay with me

I wade ashore through the scummy foam The sun’s already hot and it smells just like I’d forgotten that i remember it smelling The orange tree arches over the doorway, and it's so green that it makes me want to cry And I don’t know if I have my land legs back One step more and I’m past where dreaming could take me I have a heart pumping tar and skin full of cracks And somewhere ships are sinking but here it's just… quiet And I see you and you look like music And it's been so long and I’m such a mess Can I be what you’ve waited all this time for? Oh, rag of a man I stop at the gate, dry wood on my fingertips There’s the place on the roof where your dad fixed it that summer I can hear children playing in the alley. I look behind myself and realize I’ve been walking But I don’t know if my feet touch the ground And you’re there in the window, you don’t turn around And I see you and I feel like dancing But my heart and my body have long forgotten the steps I don’t know what to say to you… I’m sorry I’m late? Whoah whoah Whoah whoah Penelope…

Well, it's nice to be victorious, but it's better yet to make it through The crucible of youth and come out stronger, yes, but softer too And glory and self-sacrifice have given way to warmer plans Friends that stop by through the kitchen, flowers, books, and pots and pans No monsters left to fight Plagal cadence, douse the light, The show is over, so goodnight, We’re going home
